Just like any large army (and the Republic/Empire Clone army is a pretty big one) there are many different divisions, companies and units. Divisions and companies are generally formed as part of the organization but units often develop out of experience and necessity. This is often how special units develop and they often become an elite unit that only recruits the best. They will end up wearing a special uniform to designate their elite quality. In the case of the 501st Legion and key demarcation is the clone trooper helmet.

The 501 st Legion of Clone troopers is one such unit in the Star Wars world. They are also known as Vader’s fist to indicate that they are recruited by Darth Vader and generally serve his bidding. They also serve as his bodyguards at times. Since Vader is often in some pretty tough spots, it sure to say that the 501st Legion will be there too. They often get sent to do the toughest jobs in the Universe.

The 501 st Legion earned it’s stripes (so to speak) at the battle of  Geonosis. It served in a few other skirmishes and major battles, including helping Jedis Kenobi and Skywalker on various missions. From there they were selected to become a specialist force. They were sent to Coruscant and trained in all sort of practical and combat skills. Unlike many other specialist units they did not all train in one skill but they practiced all skills needed to be a self sustaining unit. So they would all have sound space combat skills but some would have an engineering background, others could fly space fighters and others may have medical training.

They could go into a theater of combat as a self sustaining unit without the need for any other army support (unless they were numerically outnumbered). However they were not used by the Republic (or later on in the Empire) in this role. Rather they were sent all over the universe in small groups as advisers or trouble shooters for other Clone trooper units. When sent to these other units they would teach the finer arts of space combat and strategy. They would even fight alongside these other units

When the Republic became an Empire with Emperor Palpatine as supreme leader, they became more affiliated with Darth Vader and helped to secure the wishes of the Sith lord. For instance, they were involved in many of the activities leading up to the destruction of the Death Star. They also led a retaliatory attack against rebels after the Death Star catastrophe.

501st Legion clone troopers looked pretty much the same as the standard issue clone troopers. However their helmets had slight modifications. The main difference seems to be the blue piping around the helmet that makes it stand out from the plain white helmets. Other than that the shape is exactly the same.
